A/Prof Niloufar Torkamani leads our team as a specialist Endocrinologist. She focuses on understanding—and treating—the hormonal drivers of hair loss. With deep expertise in endocrine physiology, she has spent years exploring how hormones shift. Androgens, thyroid hormones, and stress hormones disrupt the hair cycle. They weaken follicles and trigger progressive thinning in both women and men.
Her passion for this field ignited during her PhD and post-fellowship research at the University of Melbourne. She conducted one of Australia’s most prominent studies examining the hormonal mechanisms behind androgenic alopecia. Her work revealed how hormonal imbalances affect follicular miniaturisation and scalp health. She contributed valuable insights into personalised, hormone-targeted treatment strategies. Leading journals, including the British Journal of Dermatology, have published her research. Her work continues to inform best-practice care in clinical endocrinology.
In addition, A/Prof Torkamani holds an honorary academic position at the University of Melbourne. She supervises and mentors PhD candidates, physician trainees, and medical students.
